Chapter 12 continued

I need a bag to protect my camera so I've started to make my design up even if I don't use it for my 3D embroidered item.

I've realised I didn't put measurements on my design drawings. My camera is what is known as a 'bridge' camera - in between a compact and a DSLR but it's considerably larger than a compact. I've put a ruler beside the bag to give an idea of size.

The base is a 6 sided shape but once it's been sewn into the sides the bag becomes rounded.

Chapter 12 - Ideas for Designing a functional 3D Embroidered Item

After a few months of not having the energy to do much on this Module I'm on the last leg. I started with a spider diagram of ideas for a 3D item.


Stage 1

Firstly I drew various 3D shapes in my sketchbook.


Then developed them further. Lots of ideas for future use.

Decorated papers on the paper template.


Stage 5

My first idea was a bowl but after doing some preparatory work I changed my mind.




My second idea is based on a 'Dolly' bag.




Fabric I'll use to make finished bag. I used strips of decorated fabric sewn together.


Then cut them up and rearranged them before sewing together with the seams to the outside.

Chapter 11 -Further Design Exercises leading to Fabric Samples

Stage A

Using decorated papers I made 4 samples which I translated into fabric samples using decorated black and white fabric.




Stage B was similar to the challenge in Chapter 10. Take a section of the original fabric sample and cut and seam it until you couldn't do it any more. I hadn't made a big enough piece to start with so had to do another sample to do the third part but I think you can see from the photot what I was aiming for.


All the samples are placed on A3 sheets of black card.

Chapter 10 - 'Piecing' A Method of Cutting and Seaming

I used Photoshop to do this first exercise in Chapter 10. The idea is to cut and rearrange black and white paper until you get interesting patterns.



Next I made one of the design up in fabric but by the time I'd finished it wasn't anything like I intended.

Sian set an additional challenge to take a section of the original fabric sample and cut and seam it until you couldn't do it any more. I should have cut it into uneven sizes because it got smaller and smaller as I went.
